Special FreePhone Tariff (SFT)

In conjunction with BT, Call Handling and Alternative Networks, and with the agreement of Ofcom, the Telephone Helplines Association is able to offer access to a Special Freephone Tariff for THA members.

The aim of this service is to enable more helplines, particularly those who could not afford to do so before, to operate a helpline service that protects caller confidentiality, otherwise compromised by existing and developing technology.

Special Freephone Tariff numbers will begin 0808 80X followed by 4 digits. This prefix is only available to THA members joining the SFT scheme and it is hoped the public will eventually identify 0808 80X with non-profit quality services.

There are three different service providers:

  • BT with numbers 0808 800 XXXX

  • Call Handling with numbers 0808 801 XXXX

  • Alternative Networks with 0808 808 XXXX

BT and Alternative Networks offer a call charge of 3.5p per minute.  Call Handling offers a reduced charge of 3p per minute peak and 2p per minute off-peak.  All providers in the scheme offer their rates irrespective of call volumes.

There are other differences relating to setup and administration fees, line rental and the availability and cost of additional features such as 'golden numbers', routing options and statistical reporting.

THA urges members to carefully compare the charges and services offered by the three providers to ensure that you make an informed choice about the one that best suits your needs.  THA has worked to try and ensure that the companies are able to sustain services offered and there is a common understanding of the issues faced by THA members.

To obtain the Special Freephone Tariff an application form needs to be completed.
